Noli Me Tangere Wiki

Doña Victorina was a socialite and friend of Capitan Tiago. She along with her husband Don Tiburcio sought to associate themselves with the influential figures of San Diego in order to gain further social status.

History[]

Early Life[]

Born in 1836, as she grew up Doña Victorina rejected all of her suitors, wanting to marry a Spaniard. By 1881, she badly needed a husband to maintain her social status; this led her to meet the quack doctor Don Tiburcio through a mutual friend. Soon after, they were married. During this time, she also began pretending to be a Spaniard herself, putting on many airs despite being a native indio. Among these airs was pretending she was pregnant and supposedly scheduling a trip to Spain for her to give birth there.[1]

The Doctor and the Socialite[]

Eventually, Doña Victorina had her husband claim he was a specialist for all diseases and pretend he was an extremely sought-after surgeon. Because of this, Don Tiburcio was chosen by Capitan Tiago to attend to his daughter Maria Clara after she fell ill. Doña Victorina thus came up with the idea of pairing up Maria Clara with Tiburcio's relative Linares in order to gain further social status.[1]

To this end, Doña Victorina brought Linares along when Don Tiburcio made a house call to Capitan Tiago in San Diego.[2]
